Sumy’s Frontline Medics: Saving Lives at Great Risk

"We keep our eyes on the sky, just to make sure nothing is flying overhead,” say the drivers of mobile medical teams in the border areas of the Sumy region, which neighbour the aggressor state. They keep working alongside medical staff, because thousands of patients still live in these communities — over two hundred of them requiring palliative care.

A recent news story by Suspilne, Ukraine’s public broadcaster, highlights the everyday reality of the Svesa Primary Healthcare Center, which we support through the project “Strengthening the Primary and Secondary Healthcare System in the Sumy Region,” implemented with the support of the International Rescue Committee in Ukraine (IRC).

Until recently, the Center’s doctors had to travel to frontline villages — Svesa, Marchykhyna Buda, Mykytivka, Kniazhychi, and Orlivka — without any personal protective equipment. Some of these villages lie just 3 km from the state border. The medical teams were also in urgent need of tourniquets and medical equipment.
